Slices of Fiction was a solo exhibition by Deja Brown that reimagined iconic cakes from film and television as illustrated works. The show featured 13+ illustrations inspired by memorable moments—like Matilda’s chocolate cake and Sleeping Beauty’s 16-layer cake failure—each interpreted through Deja’s distinct visual style. Designed as a one-night-only interactive experience, the exhibition extended beyond the artwork. The venue smelled like cake by using cake-scented candles; there was music from the movies, and baked goods from local Denver bakeries. The goal was to transform the space into an over-the-top birthday party atmosphere. Guests were encouraged to dress the part if they’d like by wearing party hats during the event. There were also QR codes that the attendees could scan throughout the exhibition that would lead to the relevant cake scene from the movie.

What is
‘Slices of Fiction’?

Slices of Fiction was a solo art exhibition by Deja Brown that reimagined iconic cakes from film and television as illustrated works. The show features 13+ illustrations inspired by memorable movies—like Matilda’s chocolate cake and Sleeping Beauty’s 16-layer cake failure—each interpreted through Deja’s distinct visual style. The event was designed as a one-night-only immersive experience; the exhibition extended beyond the artwork. The venue was curated to smell like cake by using cake-scented candles, there was music from each movie playing, and plenty baked goods and drinks from sponsors and from local Denver bakeries. The space was transformed into an over-the-top birthday party atmosphere. Guests were encouraged to wear party hats and eat pop corn as they explored each work!

Cake = Community

At its core, Slices of Fiction explores how food in media becomes shared cultural memories, connecting us through imagination and nostalgia. After nearly two years in development, the concept was finally ready to come to life!

The event also featured a community-driven initiative: guests were invited to bring non-perishable, “birthday-themed” items (cake mix, frosting, candles) that were later donated to the Food Bank of the Rockies to help ease the pressure to buy cakes for birthdays for low income or famlies in need.
